World Architecture Festival turns its back on western Europe

Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI project in Rome may have been a deserving winner of the World Building of the Year award at the World Architecture Festival, but it was certainly not typical of the projects to receive accolades.

The spread of projects was impressive with category winners from Azerbaijan, Australia, Singapore, South Africa and Palestine. One architect, from Singapore, said that he felt this year’s conference addressed urban issues from a far less Eurocentric perspective. And it was fascinating to hear Joe Noero from South Africa talking about the fact that Africa doesn’t have the European love affair with squares and plazas, and that the important space is the street itself.
