About Ruth Slavid

ruth portraitI am an architectural journalist and editor, with extensive experience in communicating architecture. Since October 2008 I have been working freelance. Before that I was with The Architects’ Journal for 15 years, in roles including deputy editor, editor of AJ Specification and online editor.

Since becoming freelance I have written for Architectural Review, Auditoria, AJ Specification, BSD Magazine, Building Design, The Guardian, Professional Motor Sports Circuit, Specification magazine, Stadia, and The Architects’ Journal and Winter Sports Technology International. Other organisations for which I have worked include CABE New London Architecture, the RIBA and the World Architecture Festival.

I am the author of five books: Wood Architecture, Wood Houses, Micro, Extreme Architecture and Timber in Refurbishment.

I am currently editing the second issue of Buro Happold’s new incarnation of Patterns magazine.

In addition to writing and editing, I can host events, and run websites.

I have a degree in metallurgy and materials science, and before joining The Architects’ Journal worked on scientific and construction titles.

Interests, in addition to architecture, include the workings of the brain, language and languages, cooking and old films.
